 Professor of Spirits,

John Barrett
hosted a "Bourbon tasting" at BOGART'S!

*** SOLD OUT ***

John Barrett holds a Master's Degree

in Fermentation Sciences from the

University of California at Davis.

Included in the tasting were five select bourbons.

Gentleman Jack

Woodford Reserve

Jack Daniels Black Label

Jack Daniels Single Barrel

Old Forester Birthday Bourbon

Although his official title is on-premise development manager, John Barrett is better known as the whiskey professor since he travels the country conducting educational training and tasting sessions for bar

and restaurant employees, on behalf of the Jack Daniel's Distillery.

How did he become a whiskey professor? During the summers while he was in the University of Wisconsin pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education, he funded his education by working in the malt house of the local G. Heileman Brewing Company in LaCrosse.

On a grant from the Brewers' Association of the Americas, Barrett returned to school in California where he studied wine-making and brewing and received a master's degree in food and fermentation science from the University of California at Davis. He also directed brewing at a number of noteworthy craft and commercial breweries before becoming the brewmaster for the Jack Daniel Brewery where he developed beer that was aged with oak wood from used Jack Daniel's whiskey barrels.

"Making beer is similar to making whiskey. Both start with natural grains, water and yeast. Both go through fermentation. In fact, you make a distiller's beer during the whiskey-making process," explains Barrett.

"Whiskeys, like wines, are complex. I want to help people recognize the difference subtleties and nuances of whiskeys so they can understand and enjoy what they are drinking."

Barrett also conducts tastings for consumer and trade groups, where the lesson focuses on the whiskeys of the world, single malt Scotch, Irish whiskey, Kentucky bourbon and Tennessee whiskey and what makes them different.

I can continuously pour everything back into music {and hopefully glorify the Creator in doing so}.
In perspective, music and I have had a relationship my entire life; music has taken me from a grade schooler obsessed with roller rink songs and talent shows to a seventh grader who first picked up his mom's guitar because he was sick {and knowing it was love at first touch} to who I am now - a 21-year-old who believes dreams are not meant to remain elegant quotes on posters in school classrooms but meant to be lived out {ruthlessly and passionately, at that}."

"Anyone who know's me, knows that I appreciate good chocolate.

The only thing better than good chocolate is a nice place in which to enjoy it (perhaps with a good glass of wine). Found it!

Bogart's wine bar is located in Downtown Neenah. It's a great place to enjoy an after-dinner drink and light dessert (read: chocolate). I loved the intimate, classy decor and the relaxed atmosphere. The best part: we spent a relaxing hour without having to scream over loud "bar" music.

Bogart's features locally-made Wilmar's Chocolate truffles. They also serve a selection of cognac, champagne, imported beer, single malt scotch whiskey, and artisan cheese."

Bogart's is located in the Neenah Marketplace at 124 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Neenah

"I planned a bridal shower here recently, and I could not be happier with choosing Bogart's. I planned the bridal shower from out-of-state, and was pretty frustrated with my options in the area after I called about 15 different places. Not wanting to use a banquet hall or a cookie-cutter space at a hotel, I came across this little gem in an online search, and after talking to the owner on the phone,

I knew this would be the perfect place!

The space is elegant, yet cozy and relaxed. The owner is a lovely woman who was incredibly nice, more than willing to make recommendations as to drink options and decorating options, and she was so helpful anytime I called. On top of the atmosphere, the sangria was some of the best I've ever had (and I like sangria, a lot) and the wine choices were perfect.

Great local business that I HIGHLY recommend!"

      A note from Jessica...

"First of all, I would like to thank you for your interest in my art work. When I was a little girl I remember looking at my Grandpas paintings and being so inspired. He was such a talented artist. I started doing little sketches, and it was high school art classes when I realized that I really loved to draw. People, pets, homes, cottages and wildlife have been among my favorites. Although, I feel my best work has been in portraits. I wanted to find a way to make my pieces stand out from others, so I began using chalk and charcoal on black paper. I love looking at a picture, sitting down and turning it into a drawing that is as close to life as it can be! Drawing to me is a way of turning one moment into a piece of art that will last forever, and I would love the opportunity to do that for you."

Customer Reviews from... Taste of the Fox Valley

Bogarts Fine Spirits & Cigars

April 13th, 2009

"Welcome back to tasteofthefoxvalley.com. This week my wife and I revisited what is becoming one of our favorite new locations, Bogarts Fine Spirits & Cigars.  Bogarts is a fairly new bar located downtown Neenah in the Marketplace.  We  visited Bogarts previously and each time we go back we seem to enjoy it more and more.  For us this is the perfect after dinner place to sit, relax and enjoy what they have to offer.

Atmosphere: Bogarts has the ambiance that we are looking for when we are out with just each other or meeting friends.  As  you  enter you are instantly impressed by the beautiful old fashioned sign hanging above the door.  The windows located on both sides of the entrance showcase the fine Wilmer’s Chocolates, beautiful bottles of scotch, wine and other spirits they offer. You can view these photos below to get an idea of the atmosphere of Bogarts."

"As you walk into the establishment, you enter the main seating area. Bogarts is dimly lit, with gold painted walls and a light wood floor which maintain that rich elegance that greeted you at the front door. There area few seats at the bar but mostly small pub style tables."

"If you would like a little more privacy there is a small lounge just off the main  area with seating for 5. As I was sipping on my scotch,  I admired the nice details surrounding me.  Some old cigar boxes, a cognac book, a bottle of wine, and nostalgic pictures on the wall from Casablanca.  I particularly enjoyed the music of Frank Sinatra playing in the background."

"The bar is beautiful, if only the pictures could do it justice.   I tried explaining to my wife that we need to redo our basement to look like this, but she gave me a quick eye roll and we moved on. Behind the bar is a display of whiskeys, scotches, cognac and other spirits they offer as well as available beers. Next to the bar is a nice sized display humidor showing off a very thorough selection of cigars. The cigar prices were very fair so it never hurts to pick up one more for your humidor."

"Spirits: I could not find a menu on Bogart’s website but did take this this quote from the web page. We specialize in serving a unique selection of wine, cognac, champagne, imported beer, single malt scotch whiskey, artisan cheese, chocolate truffles and premium cigars. While we were there I had a glass of 12 year old Aberlour scotch and my wife had few pieces of Chocolate Truffle. The chocolates they offer come from Wilmar chocolates in Appleton."

Conclusion: "Bogarts is definitely a must try. With a collection of some of the best spirits, a rich atmosphere and friendly service you won’t be disappointed."

"Walking into Bogart's is the essence of a chic, urban lounge found in New York City or Chicago. It exudes warmth with a touch of mystery which intrigues its guests, not only with the decor, but the tempting visual delights for one's palate. Upon my first encounter I felt so welcomed and indulged that I've since returned with friends/family to partake of their sumptuous libations and culinary treats, of which I highly recommend the "black champagne" and chocolate truffles, my favorites. In addition, my business associate, who is a cigar connoisseur, found their selection of cigars to be superb. With noteworthy experiences such as these, I, personally, will continue to encourage and verbally applaud my delight with this establishment to others who are seeking that "memorable" evening out."

The Buzz: New bars pop up throughout Fox Valley

From wine bars to simple taverns, watering holes spring to life

"Wisconsinites love their bars, cocktail lounges and taverns, and there will be plenty of new ones to try out in the coming months.

A number of new watering holes — some attached to restaurants — are in the planning stages based on construction activity and liquor license applications.

That includes Spinners Bait Shop & Bar in Grand Chute and Sliders Bar and Grill in Menasha, both of which should open shortly.

Bogart's is one of the most recent places to open. It's a small upscale wine and spirits bar at 124 W. Wisconsin Ave. in Neenah, inside the Market Place building to the left of Aspen Coffee & Tea. It's also a cigar merchant.

Bogart's serves the three things that trend watchers say are recession proof: alcohol, chocolate and tobacco. It offers scotch, wine, cognac and a selection of Wilmar truffles and turtles. They wanted to evoke a warm, vintage feeling and are particularly happy with their intricate inlaid wood (marquetry) hunting scene bar made in Italy in 1955. Phone: 920-886-0696."
